According to the late Paul Robeson, artists have the opportunity to use their platforms to make significant changes in society. However, some would argue that artists have no obligation to address certain issues. Although they may have a point, when I think of artists who have become icons in popular culture, I think of those who have used their voices to raise awareness, especially as it pertains to social and political issues. Artists, such as Bob Marley, Nina Simone, John Lennon, Fela Kuti, Michael Jackson, Tupac Shakur, have all taken a stand against the injustices of the world. In retrospect, they have become bigger than their artistry. They have been philanthropists, humanists, revolutionaries, and activists. They have been individuals who have lived their lives beyond just fortune and fame.

Issues, such as poverty, gun violence, police brutality, gangs, and racism continue to persist. But there is a new wave of artists who are carrying the torch. These artists are not only using their music, but also fashion to make social and political statements. For instance, in the 2004 presidential election, P. Diddy (founder of Bad Boy Records), Sean John, and Citizen Change launched a campaign to encourage more young people between the ages of 18 and 30 to vote. This helped change the face of the U.S. political landscape by encouraging the youth to “Vote or Die”, using celebrities as his support system.

The campaign was meant to show that the right to vote is a matter of life or death. This notion may not be too far-fetched, as people have literally fought and died for this freedom. I believe this resonated with young people, not only because of the celebrities involved, but also because of its simple, yet powerful position in politics. This campaign was not only successful in 2004, but also in 2008, when President Barack Obama was elected.

Jay-Z, Hip-Hop artist and co-founder of Rocawear, also attempted to use fashion as a statement. Although it was short-lived, he released a new line of t-shirts, which were meant to support the Occupy Wall Street movement in 2011. This movement served as a protest against social and economic disparities between corporations and the American people. The shirt “tweaks the phrase ‘Occupy Wall Street’ by crossing out the ‘W’ and adding an ‘S’ to make it read ‘Occupy All Streets’.”

Unfortunately, this effort led to a little bit of controversy, primarily because he never intended on sharing his profits to the actual protestors. The Business Insider states, “A Rocawear spokesperson sent us a statement confirming there’s no plan to distribute any of the profits, which will surely pour in from shirt sales, to Occupy Wall Street.” According the spokesperson, “The ‘Occupy All Streets’ T shirt was created in support of the ‘Occupy Wall Street’ movement. Rocawear strongly encourages all forms of constructive expression, whether it be artistic, political or social. ‘Occupy All Streets’ is our way of reminding people that there is change to be made everywhere, not just on Wall Street. At this time we have not made an official commitment to monetarily support the movement.”

This leads to questionable motives of certain artists. There seems to be a thin line between legitimacy and sincerity from the public’s point of view, especially in this day and age where there are many cultural capitalists. In my opinion, there needs to be a clear alignment between the art and actions of the individuals, which leads me to Kendrick Lamar’s recently released, “Ventilators 2” by Reebok.

Throughout his career, Lamar has repeatedly shed light on his upbringing in Compton, California, where gang culture seems to dominate the living conditions of his immediate environment. Having been heavily influenced by this reality, he has always mentioned it in both his music and interviews. With songs, such as: “Little Johnny”, “M.A.A.D. City (featuring MC Eight), and “I”, he continues to provide a voice for his constituents by emphasizing social, political, and economic discrepancies that are woven into the American fabric. His response to these discrepancies and pervasiveness of gang culture are the Ventilators 2. Complex mentions, “These Ventilators, which were previewed by Sneakers.fr, are set against an off-white suede base with alternating blue and red accents on each shoe. The gang references are apparent, and each tongue tag is inscribed with ‘Neutral,’ echoing a sentiment Kendrick has been pushing strongly during his career.”

Other artists, such as Usher and John Legend (pictured below), aren’t necessarily known for making social and political commentary in their music, but they have also been recently seen using fashion to make a statement.

As we continue to face adversities in our lives, it is important to have the opportunity to express ourselves constructively. It may not necessarily be directly based on certain social, economic, or political issues; however, we are undeniably affected by these issues in one way or another. In that regard, we should continue to find creative ways to address these issues for the betterment of mankind.

Hamilton is a Broadway musical that takes a very old school tale and spins it with a hip hop beat to update the story for today’s audience. When you think of United States historical figures like George Washington, Benjamin Franklin and John Quincy Adams, you probably think of a bunch of white dudes with puffy pants, powdered wigs and a 1 percent attitude — a strange and distant past that doesn’t seem too appealing to visit. The Broadway musical Hamilton takes this impression and turns it on its head.

The phrase, “history is written by the victors’ has been used for many years to describe the tendency seen in many history books to ignore the narratives of common people and instead focus on the stories of the most powerful humans and groups. Andrew Jackson’s legacy in the United States for the past two centuries has often proved the truth in that phrase. However, with the announcement in mid-April that Harriet Tubman’s face will replace Jackson’s on the front of the 20-dollar bill, a small piece of history was written to honor a woman who was not a victor in the traditional sense.

Jackson, who would later be elected the country’s seventh president, rose to fame as a general in the U.S. Army. A combat veteran of the American Revolution by the age of 13, Jackson led his troops in many victorious battles for the U.S. during the Indian Wars and the War of 1812. As president, Jackson won many political battles, proving that he was a victor in many aspects of his life.

Despite Jackson’s many successes, though, critics point to the fact that he owned slaves and relocated thousands of Native Americans along the infamous Trail of Tears as proof that Jackson should not be remembered so fondly.

Harriet Tubman: An Inspiration To Many

Meanwhile, there is little controversy about Tubman’s life and contributions. After being born into slavery, Tubman escaped and helped many others to do so through her use of the Underground Railroad. Tubman is remembered as a self-empowered woman who fought back against the injustices of her time to improve conditions for many other enslaved African-Americans.

Is it fair to compare the Black Panthers to a hate or terrorist movement? Let’s look at how they really compare to the KKK and the world’s most known terrorist group, ISIS.

The public reaction to Beyoncé’s Formation video and Super Bowl performance was, well, maybe it’s best to let Saturday Night Live demonstrate it. Among the controversial images are a child not being shot by police, a police car sinking into a storm surge in New Orleans, and, at the Superbowl, a black power salute while wearing black berets, a nod to the Black Panther Party (BPP).

Support for the Black Panthers has stirred a lot of debate, not all of it measured. Newscaster Tomi Lahren referred to the Black Panthers as similar to the KKK. A city councilor for the city of Toronto has asked the Canadian government to investigate Beyoncé for possible terrorist links.

Pundits and police unions have made similar claims, calling the Black Panthers a hate movement. Is it fair to compare the Black Panthers to a hate or terrorist movement? Let’s look at how they really compare to the KKK and the world’s most known terrorist group, ISIS.

 

Origins

  • The Black Panther Party was founded as an organization in Oakland in 1966 that advocated resisting police brutality with deadly force. They soon embraced revolutionary Black Nationalist, Maoist, and women’s liberation politics, performing activism and providing social programs to uplift African-Americans.
  • The KKK was founded in 1865 by a former Confederate officer to attack freed slaves, Northerners, and federal government employees. Due to a federal crackdown, it remained small until around 1917, when it rapidly grew to include millions, including many politicians.
  • ISIS was founded as a Jordanian terror cell in 1999, dedicated to establishing a single fundamentalist government ruling the entire world. In 2003, it gained prominence through participation in the Iraqi insurgency and later gained real territory as a result of the chaos of the Syrian civil war.

 

Crimes

  • The Black Panther Party committed at least seven homicides, roughly two dozen assaults, and several counts of jury intimidation. Most victims were police or members of the BPP itself.
  • The KKK’s violence is difficult to estimate. About 3,500 African-Americans were lynched during the years of KKK activity. Anywhere between 1000 and 50,000 people were also killed in anti-black riots. However, the KKK may not have committed all of these. Most estimates fall between a minimum of 2,000 homicides and a maximum of 50,000. Tens of thousands more were tortured or had their homes destroyed.
  • The official count of ISIS’ victims is around 10,000 dead, but due to the chaos of the region, this number could be much higher.

 

Size and Representation

  • The Black Panther Party had a peak membership of 2,000 in 1969, thus including roughly 1 in every 11,000 African-Americans.
  • In 1925 the KKK had a peak membership of five million, thus including roughly 1 in every 20 white Protestants in the United States.
  • By the Pentagon’s estimate, ISIS had a peak membership of 50,000 in early 2015, thus including roughly 1 in every 600 Sunni Muslims in Syria and Iraq.

In this lesson, students will look at different document sets, comparing the three organizations on issues such as community service, violence, ideology, aims, the reactions of society, and the roles of women.

The 2016 Propaganda Election: What is the Media Telling Us?

 

Take a minute to ask yourself, who you would vote for in this election and what information are you using to make that decision. Is it information you received from the media? Do you remember what channel or news outlet you got that information from? Where did you get your information and have you ever questioned the quality and accuracy of this information?

“A strong argument could be made by all candidates — Democrat and Republican — that there has been some level of media malpractice as it relates to the amount of coverage received by their campaigns and that of the Republican front-runner, and they would be right. “

 

Where are you getting your information?

The presidential hopefuls all have their own websites and social media presence that we can seek out to learn about them. However, we receive information all the time, in a variety of mediums, that influence our thoughts, opinions, and beliefs, whether we seek it out or not. Consciously or not, we as a people are constantly bombarded with information that we assimilate into our perception of reality. It’s up to us to sort through what is truthful and what resonates with us.  To be a critical thinking participant in a democracy, we must listen to our hearts and our reason, and make subsequent choices.

During the Primary elections, Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders were both hoping for the Democratic party candidacy.  Back in March, Hillary Clinton won most of the state primaries. Afterwards, Bernie Sanders gave a speech for almost an hour, in Arizona, to give hope to his supporters. This speech was not covered by any of the major cable news channels, not even a summary.  Instead, they focussed on awaiting a Donald Trump reaction to the evening. Rather than airing Bernie’s speech, the leading news networks left their cameras on Donald Trump’s empty podium!

Is the coverage equal?

The Tyndall Report monitors the weekday nightly newscasts of the three American broadcast television networks: ABC World News, CBS Evening News and NBC Nightly News.

Hillary Clinton’s coverage on television was far greater than Bernie Sanders. In December of 2015, the Sanders campaign complained in a news release about the lack of Sander’s coverage.  They stated, “(The Sanders) campaign, that has drawn the biggest crowds on the presidential campaign trail, has been all but ignored on the flagship television network newscasts.”  The Tyndall Report’s annual totals for 2015 found that Clinton received 121 minutes of campaign coverage on the networks while the “noticeably under-covered” Sanders received only 20 minutes.

The bulk of the Sanders campaign’s complaint seemed to be aimed at the coverage of the Republican front-runner, Trump, whom the campaign accused the networks of “wildly overplaying,” “while at the same time wildly underplaying Sanders.”

A strong argument could be made by all candidates — Democrat and Republican — that there has been some level of media malpractice as it relates to the amount of coverage received by their campaigns and that of the Republican front-runner, and they would be right. It’s not out of the question to state that if any candidate had received the huge media coverage of the current Republican front-runner, Donald Trump, they might be in a stronger position now. Who is the media catering to?

Charle’s M Blow wrote an opinion piece for the NY Times that brought up many good points about the role the media has played in the current election season.  There appear to be two parallel universes of Democratic voters this season — one disproportionately older, the other disproportionately younger — whose habits make them almost invisible to each other.

Clinton’s voters may be less likely to show up to rallies, or post on social media or be serial commenters who commandeer comments sections, but they do show up to vote. But these are the same voters who are less likely to hear much news about Sanders.  Sanders gets the “cool” vote from the millennials and first time voters, but again, this demographic has sadly not voted consistently enough to make an impact.

In a February Pew Research Center survey, a plurality of people 18 to 29 years old said that the social media was their most helpful source for learning about the 2016 presidential election. A plurality of those 30 and over cited cable news as the primary source. Network news was the second most popular source for those 65 and older.

Indeed, the Tyndall Report pointed out that nearly as much coverage of Clinton was about controversies as about her candidacy. In addition to the 121 minutes of campaign coverage Clinton received on the nightly network newscasts in 2015, she also received “88 minutes devoted to the controversy over her emails as secretary of state and 29 minutes to the investigations into the Benghazi Consulate attack.”

Is there an agenda?

Whether or not this media coverage will have an impact on the election results, remains to be seen.  And then, its up to us and watchdog’s like the Tyndall Report, to reflect on how the media may have affected the race.  As for now, we have cold hard facts to look critically at the coverage of each candidate.  Why do certain candidates receive more media attention than others?

Some say that the media is simply a leftist propaganda machine that aims to promote liberal sensibilities, and paints conservative issues in a negative light.  Within that accusation, there are signs that the media is biased around a specific democratic candidate as detailed in this article.  Others say the opposite, that the conservatives have made a concerted effort to move away from the liberal media, and examples of this can be debated legitimately.  Such as the case with the coverage of 9/11, with the Bush administration vs the scrutiny President Bill Clinton received during his scandal in the 90’s, as well as Donald Trump’s popularity in the news.

Are they chasing ratings?

The CEO of CBS, Les Moonves, has on several occasions expressed his delight about the revenue that Donald Trump’s campaign is bringing to his network. He even went as far as to say, “Man, this is pretty amazing. Who would have thought this circus would come to town? It may not be good for America, but it’s damn good for CBS. [Laughs] The money’s rolling in …. This is fun.”

Whether or not this will change in the future is not relevant to this year’s election, what has been done is done.  Now, we must become aware that the media may not give us a clear picture of the candidates, and then try to balance our own knowledge and make our own choices based on that.

The Art of Fresh: Fashion and Philanthropy

According to the late Paul Robeson, artists have the opportunity to use their platforms to make significant changes in society. However, some would argue that artists have no obligation to address certain issues. Although they may have a point, when I think of artists who have become icons in popular culture, I think of those who have used their voices to raise awareness, especially as it pertains to social and political issues. Artists, such as Bob Marley, Nina Simone, John Lennon, Fela Kuti, Michael Jackson, Tupac Shakur, have all taken a stand against the injustices of the world. In retrospect, they have become bigger than their artistry. They have been philanthropists, humanists, revolutionaries, and activists. They have been individuals who have lived their lives beyond just fortune and fame.

Issues, such as poverty, gun violence, police brutality, gangs, and racism continue to persist. But there is a new wave of artists who are carrying the torch. These artists are not only using their music, but also fashion to make social and political statements. For instance, in the 2004 presidential election, P. Diddy (founder of Bad Boy Records), Sean John, and Citizen Change launched a campaign to encourage more young people between the ages of 18 and 30 to vote. This helped change the face of the U.S. political landscape by encouraging the youth to “Vote or Die”, using celebrities as his support system.

The campaign was meant to show that the right to vote is a matter of life or death. This notion may not be too far-fetched, as people have literally fought and died for this freedom. I believe this resonated with young people, not only because of the celebrities involved, but also because of its simple, yet powerful position in politics. This campaign was not only successful in 2004, but also in 2008, when President Barack Obama was elected.

Jay-Z, Hip-Hop artist and co-founder of Rocawear, also attempted to use fashion as a statement. Although it was short-lived, he released a new line of t-shirts, which were meant to support the Occupy Wall Street movement in 2011. This movement served as a protest against social and economic disparities between corporations and the American people. The shirt “tweaks the phrase ‘Occupy Wall Street’ by crossing out the ‘W’ and adding an ‘S’ to make it read ‘Occupy All Streets’.”

Unfortunately, this effort led to a little bit of controversy, primarily because he never intended on sharing his profits to the actual protestors. The Business Insider states, “A Rocawear spokesperson sent us a statement confirming there’s no plan to distribute any of the profits, which will surely pour in from shirt sales, to Occupy Wall Street.” According the spokesperson, “The ‘Occupy All Streets’ T shirt was created in support of the ‘Occupy Wall Street’ movement. Rocawear strongly encourages all forms of constructive expression, whether it be artistic, political or social. ‘Occupy All Streets’ is our way of reminding people that there is change to be made everywhere, not just on Wall Street. At this time we have not made an official commitment to monetarily support the movement.”

This leads to questionable motives of certain artists. There seems to be a thin line between legitimacy and sincerity from the public’s point of view, especially in this day and age where there are many cultural capitalists. In my opinion, there needs to be a clear alignment between the art and actions of the individuals, which leads me to Kendrick Lamar’s recently released, “Ventilators 2” by Reebok.

Throughout his career, Lamar has repeatedly shed light on his upbringing in Compton, California, where gang culture seems to dominate the living conditions of his immediate environment. Having been heavily influenced by this reality, he has always mentioned it in both his music and interviews. With songs, such as: “Little Johnny”, “M.A.A.D. City (featuring MC Eight), and “I”, he continues to provide a voice for his constituents by emphasizing social, political, and economic discrepancies that are woven into the American fabric. His response to these discrepancies and pervasiveness of gang culture are the Ventilators 2. Complex mentions, “These Ventilators, which were previewed by Sneakers.fr, are set against an off-white suede base with alternating blue and red accents on each shoe. The gang references are apparent, and each tongue tag is inscribed with ‘Neutral,’ echoing a sentiment Kendrick has been pushing strongly during his career.”

Other artists, such as Usher and John Legend (pictured below), aren’t necessarily known for making social and political commentary in their music, but they have also been recently seen using fashion to make a statement.

As we continue to face adversities in our lives, it is important to have the opportunity to express ourselves constructively. It may not necessarily be directly based on certain social, economic, or political issues; however, we are undeniably affected by these issues in one way or another. In that regard, we should continue to find creative ways to address these issues for the betterment of mankind.

The United States of America has had its share of polarizing politicians — people loved by half the country’s citizens and loathed by the other half. Perhaps the most polarizing of all-time is the Republican presidential nominee, Donald Trump. From less serious topics (like his hair) to much more important issues (like immigration reform), everyone seems to have a strong opinion about the man known as “The Donald.”

Donald Trump: The Real Estate Mogul

Through the years, Trump has stood out for a variety of reasons. In the 1970s, he took over his father’s real estate company, the Trump Organization.  The company bought or built some of the most recognizable buildings in New York City, including Trump Tower, the Grand Hyatt, and the Javits Convention Center. Even in those early days, Trump was no stranger to controversy, as he developed a reputation for winning at all costs.

The next decade also proved fruitful for Trump, as he purchased the Plaza Hotel and many other profitable real estate properties. During the 1980s, Trump also began a family of his own after marrying his first wife Ivana in 1977. His wife and kids did little to keep him away from his business, though, as the Trump Organization continued to expand.

 

Hitting Hard Times and Rebounding Strong

Trump finally encountered significant obstacles in the early 1990s when the real estate market declined and his business lost much of the money he had earned over the past several decades. According to the site Biography, “Some observers saw Trump’s decline as symbolic of many of the business, economic and social excesses that had arisen in the 1980s.” Just as they would later in his life, Trump’s critics seemed to celebrate his struggles.

However, Trump’s business eventually rebounded and he began to enter other arenas — notably, television and politics. In 2004, his reality show The Apprentice became a huge hit by highlighting Trump’s outsized personality and knack for business. And in the past calendar year, any American who didn’t know Trump as a billionaire or TV star quickly learned about him as a politician. Despite the doubts of many well-known critics, Trump seized hold of the Republican primary process and now it looks as if he’ll be named the party’s presidential nominee at the Republican National Convention in July.

 

Love To Love Him or Love To Hate Him?

There are few Americans who don’t have strong opinions about Trump. From supporters who insist that he’ll “make America great again” to detractors who think he’s a “bigot and a racist,” Trump seems like he relishes his position as a polarizing figure. Now, the big question is: Which side are you on and how do you justify that perspective?
