Matchup of Legends: LeBron James vs. Larry Bird

Many longtime NBA fans are amazed that LeBron James is already playing in his 13th season. At first glance, that number might not seem particularly important, but consider this — Larry Bird played only 13 total seasons in his career.

Bird, who is frequently referred to as the best small forward in history, was forced into retirement by back problems after the 1991-92 season. James, meanwhile, remains one of the best players in the NBA even though he has already played in considerably more regular season games than Bird.

As a player, James shares many qualities with Bird. Both men were terrific all-around players who filled up stat sheets in almost all statistical categories. Like Bird, James has tremendous court vision and passing skills. While Bird might have been a better long-range shooter than James, LeBron has made up for that difference with his incredible efficiency in finishing plays close to the basket.

Because he came along two decades after Bird, James has benefited from better nutrition, weight training, and travel accommodations. He also had the benefit of entering the NBA straight out of high school, whereas Bird played a full college career first. However, LeBron’s supporters also argue that he is a better athlete than Bird ever was, meaning that he was built for longevity in a way that Bird wasn’t.

The site Land of Basketball shows that Bird and James are almost neck-and-neck in career accomplishments, with Bird holding the edge in championships and rebounds per game and LeBron carrying an advantage in MVP Awards and points per game.

Both James and Bird are among the 10 best NBA players ever, but only LeBron has a chance to add to his legacy. Even before James finishes out his career, LeBron vs. Larry is already one of the best debates in NBA history.

Who’s Hot, Who’s Not? Using Algebra To Analyze Viral Phenomena

Usually, by the time your grandmother starts doing the “Dougie”, you know things have gotten out of hand. Since YouTube’s launch a decade ago, it has made it all too easy to reach millions of people with a catchy video and become a viral sensation. Many videos become “viral” overnight, but few stand the test of time. Some grow organically, others are the clever, contrived work of advertising agencies and production companies. I’m always amazed by the “started from the bottom” dance crazes, where a music video that cost nothing to make becomes a global banger. Not counting cat videos, or Bat Dad (my favorite), who makes your list for the top viral videos of all time. Furthermore, who’s got the hottest dance right now flooding the interwebs? Teen Usage: Instagram vs. Facebook

Is Instagram the most popular social media app among 12-17 year-old teens? Or is Facebook still on top? Statistics vary on how many teens use each platform. CBS News stated 76% of teens use the app compared to 45% on Facebook. A Pew Research report said only 52% of teens use Instagram versus the 71% who use Facebook.

The Pew Research shows wealthier teens, or those whose parents make over $75,000, use Instagram 23% more than those teens under $30,000 at 7%. Facebook is the preferred social media among the lower income teens at 49% versus 37% for upper income teens. Girls are on Instagram more than boys, 61% versus 44%.

Instagram is more popular than Facebook among wealthy teens

Instagram began as strictly a photo sharing app, but its popularity with teens has made the app more of a social network. Teens use hashtags along with their photos and videos to gain more followers. Because of Instagram, data usage has tripled among teens. As the app has become more popular, Instagram has begun to spread to younger children. One of Instagram’s rules is that a person must be thirteen to have a profile. However, children younger than thirteen are still creating profiles, showing that younger children are becoming drawn into the social media platform.

Hashtags help with SEO, or search engine optimization. Because many teens think it’s best to have more followers than those they are following, they seek to find new followers by showing off their photos to more people. The use of hashtags makes photos and videos available for everyone to see. The more hashtags posted alongside the photos and videos, the more likely it is that new people will see those photos. Having more followers seems to appeal to teens because it makes them look more popular among their peers.
So is Instagram or Facebook more popular among the 12-17-year old teens? Do teens really use hashtags to gain followers?  How do teens know which is the most popular social media among their age group? They can conduct their own survey and draw their own conclusions.

The Data Science of Cars and Rap Lyrics

Cars in Rap Lyrics – A Sweet Data Visualization

Rap Artists are notorious for often singing about which cars are the most beloved. However, they often do this without the research to back it up. As a result, an author at Cuepoint decided to analyze all of the lyrics on Rap Genius – a resource for crowd-sourced annotations of rap lyrics - and displayed his findings using a number of methods.  He revealed the data behind how many cars are mentioned in tracks, as well as the kinds, their frequency, and other interesting trends.

Using a horizontal bar graph, the author determined that the most frequently mentioned car make is Mercedez Benz. The data was further extrapolated down to model types: the number one most mentioned model is the 1964 Chevy Impala.

Displaying the data with a time series analysis, the chart identifies the way that certain makes and models were changing in popularity. Analysis of the chart led to some noteworthy observations. For example, during the economic downturn in 2008, the popularity of less expensive brands increased.

Finally, an analysis of the specific artist that used car references most frequently was displayed with a unique sorted table.  The top artists were The Game, with 279 car songs (64% of all of his songs) and Gucci Mane with 309 car songs, (50% of all of his songs).

Cars and rap lyrics are like peanut butter and jelly – they just go together. Through the use of math and science, we are able to definitively see the data. This data analysis allows us to look further into rap and identify the valuable, less obvious trends.

What is Data Science?

Data Science refers to the tools and methods used to analyze large amounts of data. It is also known as knowledge discovery and data mining.  Many academics and journalists see no distinction between data science and statistics.

Data science employs techniques and theories drawn from many fields within the broad areas of physics, robotics, mathematics, statistics, information theory and information technology, including signal processing, probability models, machine learning, statistical learning, data mining, data engineering, pattern recognition and learning, visualization, predictive analytics, uncertainty modeling, data warehousing, data compression, computer programming, and high performance computing.

Data science techniques affect research in many domains, including the biological sciences, health care, social sciences and the humanities. It heavily influences economics, business and finance.

Visual representations of data, such as the one showing the relationship between cars and rap, evince trends in a clear and easy to understand manner. Visualizing data is a great way to make numbers, values, and what they mean easier to process for those without a deep understanding of statistics. Data science does not need to be extremely advanced or applied to something “boring.” In fact, often looking at variables outside-the-box provides the most unique and interesting insight into unexpected matters.

create-your-own-zombie-adventure-could-you-survive-the-zombie-apocalypse-590087

What are your odds of surviving a zombie apocalypse?

In the cliffhanger Season 6 finale of the Walking Dead, the group once again got themselves into a terrible situation that is definitely going to end with one of them dying. And this won’t be the last time. It seems like Rick can’t get it together. This got us wondering, “Could we do better?”

We built mathematical projections for zombie survival strategies and ran the numbers, and came up with the quiz below. Check it out and see how your personal zombie survival plan will work out.

Turns out that no, none of us would do better than Rick. By our count, of people who followed Rick’s lead, about 4% are still alive. 4% is almost double the maximum survival project in our model (1.9%).  Rick defied not just the odds, but also the basic realities of the U.S. food and ammo supplies and the extreme difficulty of just walking down a city street. He might have seemed like an idiot in Season 1 (and also Season 2, and arguably about half the episodes in Season 3), but you can’t argue with results.

In the lesson below, students will  learn how we arrived at our quiz’s model, and make a model of their own to predict additional zombie survival strategies.
