Current Events through Instagram

In this lesson, students analyze how our methods of sharing news are changing and pick a current event to research through Instagram photos.

Some media may contain mature content. Discretion is advised when viewing with students.

Lesson Plan

Show your students the Instagram photosets that are linked in the Media section above, and facilitate a discussion about obtaining news from social media sources. Ask what the first page is that they visit when they go online. Is it the news, or is it their Facebook/Twitter/Instagram? When was the last time they learned of a major current event from social media as opposed to more traditional news sources? What are the advantages of learning about current events through social media? What are the disadvantages?
