Have students look at the adventure game Journey and the first person shooter Borderlands 2. In Journey the player is paired with another player chosen at random who they are unable to converse with aside from what is known as a chirp, where the player makes a chirping noise and sends out an aura of light. Have the students watch the first youtube video of Journey (from 0:00 to 4:41). In Borderlands 2, the player is paired with other players and is able to communicate with them through the use of a microphone. Have students watch the second youtube video (from 0:00 to 7:50). The following article (http://www.ign.com/blogs/detsu) can be shown to the students so that they can get a better idea of multiplayer microphone chatting, and the opinion of some of the gaming world. When students understand the communication and gaming dynamic present in both games and have had a chance to formulate their own personal opinions on the merits and drawbacks of each, have the students think about how the different communication aspects of the game change the gameplay, paying particular attention to how inclined the players are to help each other and the way they do so. Students can also be prompted on how communication plays a role in humans helping each other in real life. The students can have a discussion with each other, or they can write an essay explaining their views of the topic.
